 January: Writing a Farm Business Plan

This series of 4 classes is only open to Big River Farms Participants and not to the public. It is required for returning participants, but 1st year participants are also welcome to attend.

February : Intro to Organic Farming Class Series

These classes are required for first year participants, and are also open to others. They are meant to cover the basics of farming in this climate and farming organically.

Intro to Organic Farming Principles: Learn the basic concepts of what is means to grow sustainably and organically.

Crop Profiles: Get a basic understanding of the different vegetable families. We will discuss direct sowing verses transplanting, growing conditions, growing days, and how to understand the information in a seed catalog.

Plot Planning and Crop Mapping: Learn how to map out a small plot to maximize production taking into account things such as, crop rotation, time of harvest, spacing, water needs and companion planting.

 Immigrant and Minority Farmers Conference: Planting Seeds for Success on Your Farm

This 2 day conference is a great opportunity to learn more on topics such as: farm management practices, efficient land use, financing a farm, finding markets, getting started with chickens, farm equipment and how to promote your farm. This conference is free to farmers.

  

March: Improving Production Class Series

These classes are required for all participants. They are designed to introduce new ideas to beginning farmers and to deepen the understanding of basic principles, in applicable ways, for returning participants.

Seed Starting & Greenhouse Production: Learn the basics of starting seeds in-doors, both on a small scale, such as in your home, and on a larger scale in a greenhouse through demonstrations and hands-on activities. Class will be held at Big River Farms in the greenhouse.
