Production and Markets Manager

Manager Minnesota Food Association (MFA) is a nonprofit organization located in the St. Croix River Valley and the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota.  The mission of the organization is to build a more sustainable food system based on social, economic and environmental justice.  MFA operates Big River Farms, a certified organic incubator farm for primarily new immigrant and minority farmers.  The land-based training program is comprehensive and participants in the program supply produce for the Big River Farms Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and wholesale distribution service. Through the program, farmers gain the skills, knowledge and resources needed to operate their own viable organic and sustainable vegetable farms, while providing fresh, organic produce to local consumers.

Primary Duties The Production and Markets Manager position exists:

1. To ensure organic certification and the sustainable management of Big River Farms (BRF) land

2. To ensure successful overall farm production including the development and implementation of production plans for diversified organic vegetable farms

3. To provide training in production and marketing aspects of BRF’s Training Program and assist in program development

4.  To develop and maintain profitable markets (CSA, wholesale and other) for BRF and participant produce

5. To support organizational development and success for mission fulfillment


·Three or more consecutive years of experience planning, planting, growing and harvesting a variety of vegetables (i.e. experience in farming and/or operating a farm)

·Experience with or knowledge of organic certification requirements

·Ability to maintain detailed records

·Ability to transfer practical knowledge into effective training moments with farm participants

·A demonstrated interest and ability to work with a diverse group of individuals

·Ability to manage multiple tasks and people simultaneously- supervisory experience required

·Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with interns, staff, volunteers and training participants

·Maturity, responsibility and dependability

·Three or more years of experience in market development and produce sales, including CSA management

·A strong work ethic and can do attitude is essential.

·Basic computer skills (MSWord, email and internet)

·Ability to speak a language shared with participants would be helpful

·Strong commitment to creating a sustainable food system and developing commercially viable farmers

·Desire and ability to collaborate internally and with external partners to contribute to the  vision, mission and goals

·Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, accountability and respect for all

·Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, farmers, funders and others

Additional Info:

MFA is located in the St. Croix River Valley, east of St. Paul, Minnesota. There may be flexibility to work from home during portions of the off-season. 

This is a full time, salaried position with seasonal schedule fluctuations. Flexibility in schedule is offered and at times, required.  Salary range is $40-$45K, based on experience.  Benefits include health insurance as well as paid vacation, holidays and sick time.
